Network to Provide AMI and Mobile Broadband to Utility Vehicle Fleet
Mountain View, December 6, 2011 – PureWave Networks, Inc. announced today that the city of Chanute, Kansas has selected PureWave’s Quantum family of all-outdoor Mobile WiMAX base stations as the wireless complement to the city’s fiber optic utility communications infrastructure. The base stations, five of which are already in operation, will be a part of the city owned utility’s wireless automatic metering infrastructure (AMI), which is expected to be rolled out throughout Chanute’s service territory.
The wireless network, operating in the 2.5GHz band, is the result of collaboration between the city of Chanute and the area educational facilities. As part of this collaboration, the city owned utility obtained lease agreements for the Educational Broadband Service (EBS) spectrum, in exchange for deploying the network and providing wireless broadband Internet access to the area educational facilities. The city of Chanute is also delivering a gigabit Ethernet connection to a range of anchor institutions, including the local hospital, public library, community college, school district, and several businesses within the community. The network provides a Gigabit Internet connection using a fiber link to a Tier 1 provider.
"This is very positive for our community," said Larry Gates, Director of Public Utilities and Public Works at Chanute. "The educational facilities in our area are enjoying advanced broadband services over a state-of-the-art 4G wireless network, while the city owned utility is looking to deliver advanced smart grid services to our 5,400 electric customers and 4,400 gas and water customers."
In addition to the AMI application, the city is also planning to equip its fleet of approximately 100 utility vehicles with mobile WiMAX hotspots. These devices will replace existing two-way radios installed in the vehicles and deliver mobile broadband services to utility work crews in the field. "Having the ability to download work orders and GIS mapping remotely, without having to make a special trip back to the office, is expected to generate significant productivity gains, and that’s without taking into consideration all the other advanced applications that are possible once mobile broadband becomes part of our infrastructure," added Gates.
"Chanute has deployed a state of the art network that will serve the city for many years to come," said Dan Carr, President of Electronic Technology, Inc. which advised Chanute in their network planning and deployment. "In helping Chanute to develop its network deployment plan, our goal was to build a flexible but affordable network that would be able to evolve and expand as the city’s needs grow."
"PureWave Quantum base stations offer a unique combination of ruggedness, flexibility and ease of deployment that make them ideal for a wide range of applications," said Ronen Vengosh, PureWave’s VP of Marketing and Business Development. "Chanute is making excellent use of this versatility by running both smart grid applications and delivering broadband services to their community on the same network. This is a cost effective model that city owned utilities around the country should consider."
