The Macro/Pico Dilemma – too much, too little, too expensiveAs the WiMAX marketplace and WiMAX networks mature, the mobile broadband landscape is changing. Traditional macro base stations, once the mainstay of a carriers network, are falling short of their promise on many levels.

With a limited range, macro base stations don’t deliver the required coverage and capacity per unit area. In dense subscriber areas, the ubiquitous 2.5 and 3.5 GHZ frequency bands present severe propagation challenges. Indoor coverage is problematic even when targeting first-wall penetration. Acquisition, Zoning and Planning (AZP) issues are limiting the locations in which macro base stations can be installed. And, in more developed areas, a larger number of base stations require integrated, in-band backhaul.

Filling in the gaps with less expensive pico base stations is not answer either. Although alleviating some of the coverage deficiencies, current pico products rely on wire line backhaul. Vendors have yet to resolve the unique pico base station deployment requirements, wireless backhaul technology, nor can they offer up a roadmap for interference mitigation. These obstacles, even with the hypothetical technology to address them, do not solve carrier CAPEX/OPEX challenges in this highly competitive 4G marketplace. Someone needs to change the economics of 4G network operations to maximize carrier profitability in the Mobile WiMAX market.

Welcome to PureWave Networks. The ultimate in high performance, low cost Mobile WiMAX base stations based on patent-pending PureMax Smart Antenna Technology.
